General Purpose (GP) Rating

Course Overview

General Purpose Rating (GPR) is a pre-sea training course designed for candidates who want to join the Merchant Navy as entry-level crew members. A GP Rating works in both the Deck Department and Engine Department, assisting officers in ship operations, maintenance, cargo handling, and machinery support.

The course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) and follows international maritime safety standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification
  • Minimum 10th pass from a recognized board
  • Minimum 40% aggregate marks
  • Minimum 40% marks in English (10th standard)
Age Limit
  • Generally between 17.5 to 25 years
  • Male Candidates:
    • General: up to 25 years
    • OBC (NCL): up to 28 years
    • SC/ST: up to 30 years
  • Female Candidates:
    • General: up to 27 years
    • OBC (NCL): up to 30 years
    • SC/ST: up to 32 years
Medical Fitness
  • Medically fit as per DG Shipping standards
  • Good eyesight (6/6 vision; no color blindness)
  • Physically fit for sea service
  • Approved medical certificate required

Career Opportunities After GP Rating

After completing the GP Rating course, candidates can join ships as entry-level crew members such as:

  • Ordinary Seaman (OS)
  • Wiper
  • Deck Rating
  • Engine Rating

With sea experience and departmental examinations, GP Ratings can progress to higher positions such as Able Seaman (AB) and other certified ranks in the Merchant Navy.
